Knock International Airport
The Building of Knock International Airport was instigated by one farsighted man, the late Monsignor James Horan, Parish Priest of Knock.
Back in 1978 when Pope John Paul II visited Knock, Monsignor Horan foresaw the need for an international airport to serve the tourist industry in the West and North West of Ireland. In 1979 he first mooted the idea of an airport, planning for a future few could see. His proposals were met with ridicule bordering on scorn but he remained steadfast.
The next year a feasibility study was carried out and the ball began to roll. In addition to possessing an acute business acumen, Monsignor Horan showed an enviable flair for fundraising. He secured a government grant to start his project and campaigned successfully for financial support locally and to successful immigrants in the United States of America. The sod was turned and building on the airport began.
Six years later in 1986 Mgr Horan's dreams were realised and Knock International Airport opened its doors to the world.
Mgr Horan lived just long enough to see his beloved airport completed. In a sad end to the fairy tale, he died on pilgrimage in Lourdes just days after the airport opened.
