The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology Castlebar

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology at Castlebar is located on approximately 20 hectares of land less than 10 minutes walk from Castlebar Town. The Institute with its extensive, mature grounds and elegant buildings constitutes a pleasant and productive environment for study. The Galway- Mayo Institute of Technology at Castlebar enrolled its first students in September, 1994. There are 750 full time students currently studying at Castlebar. As well as attracting students from its immediate catchment area, GMIT at Castlebar has already drawn many students from further afield. Students at Castlebar enjoy the advantages of being part of a relatively small student population with a high staff to student ratio.

The primary aim of the Institute is to provide high quality educational programmes to students in order to prepare them for the future demands of the community in which they live and work. All of the Institute’s programmes are designed to meet the highest standards and all full-time courses are validated. Our courses are vocationally orientated and have a special focus on the needs of the job market. Graduates of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology are very highly regarded, both nationally and internationally. Students completing Certificate courses at Castlebar will have the opportunity to complete Diploma and/or Degree programmes at GMIT Galway or at Castlebar providing they attain satisfactory results in their Certificate programmes. GMIT at Castlebar is already establishing a special place for itself on the map of third level education in the west.



Overseas Links



GMIT at Castlebar has developed a number of European links with Universities and Institutes in countries such as France, Germany, Austria, Spain and Finland. The opportunity exists for students to travel abroad for part of their studies. Under the Socrates Programme the campus has established links with the Fachhochschul Studiengange Vorarlberg in Dorndirn, Austria, the Institut Europeen De Negociation in Toulouse, France and the Universidad Autonoma De Madrid in Madrid, Spain and the University of Paderborn. In September 2000, students from these institutes commenced studies at Castlebar.
